Pizza and Wine - Simple
Sunday, November 11th, 2007It doesn't always have to be a fancy place where the Sommelier comes to your table, decants your bottle and talks about the body, aroma and complexity of your selected wine. Sometimes it's a more casual dinner - how about pizza and wine?
We ate at Pizza Antica in Lafayette, CA. A nice place with great pizzas and a nice wine list. It's an open restaurant and much improved since they corrected the acoustics issue. We ordered their tomato sauce, housemade mozzarella and fresh basil pizza and added spicy fennel sausage.
We paired the pizza with a nice Zinfandel from Renwood ($28 menu price). The wine is lovely even by the glass. Matched with the spicy sausage and tomato sauce it works even better. This Zinfandel displays aromas of red fruit, berry and cracked pepper.
Not all pizza places are created equal. Head to Round Table and forget any choices of wine besides red or white. Wine with a house red or worse a Fetzer Cab isn’t the experience I’m after. I’ll take a beer. Either find a pizzareia with a great wine list or have the pizza delivered and open a wine from your stash. For me, Pizza Atica has a great wine list and Renwood is a great match for the pizza and my budget.
