  • Larkmead

    Friday, August 29th, 2008
Larkmead is a long time winery in Napa Valley, but few people know of it in that manner. The vineyards date back to the late 1800s, and have been owned by the Solari family for almost 60 years (acquired in 1948).

We had a nice time at Larkmead. Our tasting involved four wines; 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, a 2005 “Firebelle” Blend, a 2005 and a 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon.

I enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc. It had a great taste; I must like the melon taste in the Sauvignon Blanc. I also had no idea Larkmead had a Sauvignon Blanc and was pleasantly surprised.

The 2005 “Firebelle” Blend was 48% Merlot and 40% Cabernet. It tasted young to me and not ready to drink. It did have a nice aroma and color. This wine is Bordeaux-like, so that’s probably why I didn’t care for it.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was my favorite, and I liked it better than the 2002. This wine is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Robert Parker gave it 90 POINTS, and said "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of floral-infused black currants and cherries, some smoke and graphite notes, outstanding density, ripeness, and overall harmony. Still backward and austere in the finish, this is a Medoc look-alike that should drink handsomely between 2010 and 2020+."

Sunny was our expert for the day and he was very informed and pleasant. Call ahead and make a reservation, this winery is well worth it.
