Chimney Rock Rocks!
Friday, September 5th, 2008Chimney Rock was established in 1980 and has been getting great ratings from Wine Spectator for some time. It’s a small tasting room and Tom Ebert (wine educator) was very enjoyable and pleasant. Chimney Rock is also responsible for the Sanford and Rutherford Hill wine labels.
Maureen and I did two different tastings; I did the Overview Flight and she did the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Flight).
We started the tasting with a 2006 Elevage Blanc. This is a blended white wine that has a long, balanced finish with aroma’s of peach, citrus and vanilla. A very enjoyable wine.
I then tasted the 2005 Cabernet Franc first. We love Cabernet Sauvignon’s when they have some Cabernet Franc, but have tasted 100% Cabernet Franc before (Darioush Winery http://www.darioush.com/) and didn’t care for it. I was so excited with this that Maureen and I began sharing our tastings. The Cabernet Franc had great flavor and tasted great.
We then tasted Cabernet Sauvignons from 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Wine Enthusiast just gave the 2005 a 92 (October 2008 issue). All of the wines had unique tastes and aroma’s, and it was fun to be able to compare the different years. Even more fun was bring some home, and we selected a magnum of 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 bottles of the Elevage, 4 bottles of the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 bottles of the Cabernet Franc. We’re hoping to keep the magnum for Thanksgiving or Christmas (Maureen says “we shall see,” and to hold the 2004 for a few years.
It’s great to go to name brand wineries, big and small. But it’s really great to find a special winery and experience some great wine.
