St Clement is Worth It
Friday, December 12th, 2008Anytime is a great time to wine taste, but if you like to avoid the crowds and get personal attention, go now. This time of year and before bud break there are typically fewer people visiting wineries. We were the only ones at our visit to the St Clement winery and had a relaxing tasting with Chris.
Our first wine, a 2007 Bale Lane Sauvignon Blanc, had a great nose. 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes and no malolactic fermentation allows it to retain a crisp taste. This would go great with crab or any seafood really. This is a winery only wine.
We next tried a 2007 Napa Valley Carneros Chardonnay. This is a very fruit forward wine and made in the traditional French style. Oaky with a hint of vanilla. We compared it to a more traditional California wine, the 2006 Napa Valley Chardonnay, and found it to be a smooth, clean wine. Either would be great and depends on your tastes.
The 2005 Napa Valley Merlot was a great wine with a big nose of fruit. Full body and fruity, we really enjoyed this blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was aged ion 100% French Oak but I didn’t get the oaky smell or flavors. As a comparison we also tasted the 2006 Abbotts Vineyard Merlot which is 100% Merlot. This was also fruity and bold but we liked the Napa Valley Merlot more.
On to the 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Usually with those combinations I fall head first for the wine, but I felt this wine was a little young for my tastes. It seemed mellow and I could see with age that it would be a great compliment to any meal.
2005 Oroppas was the last wine we tried. 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, it uses blends the best from 5 vineyard sources. The winemaker says that The Oroppas opens with enticing aromas of blueberry jam, red cherry, raspberry, milk chocolate, clove and brown sugar. I couldn’t agree more.
St Clements was voted the best Boutique Winery in 2007 and 2008 and is definitely worth the stop. Winery Website
